This week's paper describes the implications of a huge N-body simulation of the formation of the Milky Way's massive halo. Too many small dark-matter subhalos seem to be produced, and the stars that should be formed in them (according to simple assumptions) would result in overproduction of low- surface-brightness dwarf galaxies in the Local Group by a large factor. The paper, Madau et al. 2008 ApJ 689, L41, is here: madau08.pdf and the faux P*w*rp**nt slides are here (in pdf): madau.pdf.
